Introducing Jakarta

Whether you love it or hate it, there is no escaping Jakarta, Indonesia’s overweight capital. This ‘Big Durian’ is filled with all the good and bad of Indonesian life. At first glance, this hot, smoggy city, which sprawls for miles over a featureless plain, feels like nothing more than a waiting lounge for the millions queuing up to make their fortune. Jakarta’s infamous macet chokes its freeways, town planning is anathema and all attempts to forge a central focal point for the city have stuttered and ultimately failed. The first – or only – thought on most travellers’ minds is how quickly the city and its polluted streets can be left behind.

I don’t even know what is my feeling toward that statement. Yeah sure the description is quite true. Jakarta is a mess in so many ways. But it doesn’t mean that it is that bad!
You still can found Jakarta as a major player in economic, politic and social in South East Asia.

You still can found interesting places to go. From Monumen Nasional to five stars malls or just to hang around enjoying Kota Tua. Jakarta is a symbol of Indonesia trying to learn about modernism and democratization after Soeharto’s era. Jakarta is still having so much troubles right now but we are trying to better every single day.

Well, maybe the statement should be a warning to us, the citizen of Indonesia and especially those who lived in Jakarta. Maybe if we can rely on our unreliable government, we should do something to help shape the future of our beloved city and nation.
